Illegitimate Viola Thornhill used to be a courtesan, but now she
resides in the pretty little village of Trellick in a house called
Pinewood Manor. This was formerly the home of her father the Earl
of Bamber but then a man turns up out of the blue claiming the house
as his. He is Lord Frederick Dudley, and he has won it in a card
game from the Earl’s son and now Viola must leave. But Viola
is having none of this and refuses to go…
This is the sequel to More Than A Mistress (also reviewed
on this site) and features several of the same characters. You know
you are getting a romantic read with Ms Balogh and this one does
not disappoint in this area, although I wanted to know why a man
almost thirty and possessing both looks, title and fortune was still
a virgin. I’m not usually very keen on romances where the
two protagonists spend a lot of time at each other’s throats
but this pair are very well matched, and seeing Dudley (who is used
to getting what he wants) taken down a peg or two is very entertaining.
Viola makes for a spirited heroine, a woman with a past and plenty
of character who is determined not to just be a mistress. As this
one is set mostly in rural Somerset it is not easy to comment on
how authentic the period detail is, but both the language used and
the things the characters do and see appear to be suitable enough
for this layperson. If you like Regencies, this pair of books is
worth checking out.
