Abigail Beverley is the
dominant half of the twins and is determined to be the one
who wins back Mannerling for her family. Harry Devers is still
living there with his parents, a single and highly eligible
target for her plans. She has conveniently forgotten how he
almost assaulted her sister, but surely that was just Isabella
being missish? Things look as if they are playing into her
hands when Harry suffers a riding accident, but it is Rachel
her twin who nurses him back to health and is soon betrothed…
Just like all Ms Beaton’s Regency romances, this one
is a lot of fun. Writing sextets of linked books is a good
idea, not merely because it is unusual but because it gives
her six opportunities to tell a new story every time while
keeping us up to date with the fortunes of a group of recurring
characters. I like the idea of a house that brings out the
worst in people, causing them to obsess about it to their
detriment. Ms Beaton writes amusing, atypical romances with
a sound knowledge of her period and a determination not to
emulate any other author. This she has done with much success,
and I can imagine that these tales will appeal to readers
of chicklit (the covers help) as much as those who prefer
historicals. As with the others, this is a reprint from 1996
appearing for the first time in the UK, but I do hope she
writes some more.
