If you have read Dragongirl you will remember the terrible
plague that swept across Pern, killing human and dragon alike. Lorena
has found a cure, but with Thread coming there are not enough dragons
or riders left to fight it. The only thing to do is to look for
another place and time, but this costs Lorena's unborn child its
life. Back home everybody thinks she is lost, but when she does
return it is with news that there is such a place. Here dragons
and riders have a chance to grow to maturity; but it means going
back in time and landing on an unexplored continent.
I've followed these books since the first and there are quite a
number; this is the fourth in a series within a series. If you are
new to Pern, don't start here but go back and read Dragonflight.
Even for me with some time between reading the last book and diving
into this one I found the numerous time switches, characters in
two places/times at once etc., somewhat confusing. This is not a
book to rush through! Not that you would want to, as this series
has always been about the characters as much as what they get up
to. Both McCaffreys (but particularly Anne) have been adept at creating
people you care about and want to succeed, and this is a series
often praised for its depiction of Pern. I would have preferred
less of the time switching but for anybody following the series
this is essential reading, even if it did at times feel a little
like a bridge between what has gone before and the next book Sky
Dragons.
