In the world
of Aeronne, continents float on a gas known as The Breath and people
travel in airships. The story opens years after the end of the The
Dragon Brigade, a time when soldiers riding dragons were the core
of the military. Now the kingdoms have Navys and ships and the time
of dragons is over. Except, the magic that runs the ships, works
the guns, strengthens the armor and runs the world is in danger.
A small group known as Cadre of the Lost, undertake a mission for
the king's advisor, only to find themselves in the middle of spies
and enemies that threaten everyone.
This first
novel in the series introduces the reader to unique and charming
characters that quickly steal your heart. The Cadre is far from
a group of flawless warriors. Their greatest strength is their love
for one another -- a love and loyalty that gets them through some
tough spots. The book had the action, humor and camaraderie that
reminded me of the old Wild Wild West television series,
only with magic. The story captures the reader right from the first
page and the glimpses of humor help soften some of the darker moments.
I'm not normally a fan of stories with lots of war, battles and
intrigue, but the storytelling and characters caught me from the
first page and kept me reading eagerly 'til the end.
