This
collection of nine short stories and one novella all feature
telepath Sookie Stackhouse, famous from books and television.
For each short story in the collection, the novel matching
the story's timing is revealed in a note from the author at
the beginning. All of the stories were tremendously entertaining
mini adventures and reveal additional insights about Sookie
and her friends and family. Though Sookie is known best for
her relationships with the vampires of Louisiana, the stories
I liked best from the collection didn't feature the vampires
at all. In "Small-Town Wedding," Sookie helps a
family overcome violent prejudice that threatens a wedding.
I loved Sookie's relationship with Sam in that book, and the
story's comment on the blindness of hate. My other favorite,
"In the Blue Hereafter," teams Sookie with one of
my other favorite characters (this time a character from a
different series entirely), Midnight Texas' psychic Manfred
Bernardo. Manfred is a young man raised with considerable
moral ambiguity, and in this story (as in the Midnight Texas
novels), Manfred is on the road to discovering his own moral
compass, and he finds the journey confusing and not always
to his liking. I'm a passionate fan of the short story form
and am delighted to see that Charlaine Harris does a wonderful
job with these, making each a delicious bite of the True Blood
universe. For any Sookie fan, this collection is definitely
"must have."
