Agatha Raisin and a Spoonful of Poison
Agatha Raisin series, book # 19
by M C Beaton
Agatha Raisin is very busy running her successful detective agency and has no time for the sort of country pursuits
that she used to enjoy. But a good looking man living in the village of Comfrey Magna makes judging the jam
competition at their annual fete seem positively desirable. After a career in the PR industry, Agatha knows just
what strings to pull and favors to call in so it will be the fete of a lifetime. Unfortunately, this is just what
does happen, because somebody has put LSD in the jam! Two casualties later, Agatha has a murder case on her hands.
This is the nineteenth book in this delightful series, and long may it run, because this is one long running
sequence which shows no sign of running out of steam. As usual, there are just the right amounts of old and new
features to make it seem fresh and engaging, with James not currently in residence next door, a new face at the
detective agency and another new location. Perhaps it is the wonderfully satirical humor that makes these stories
memorable, giving a warts-and-all look at many aspects of modern life mixed in with the coziness. I didn’t guess
the outcome either, and there are various other surprises in store to ensure that this series will keep evolving,
and continue being innovative and highly readable. Even if you think you don’t like cozies, this series has a keen
edge which lifts it out of the common run and into a niche of its own. |
