Lori Shepherd wishes for something to change the familiar routine of her life in the English
village of Finch. An answer to her wish is the Renaissance Festival. King Wilfred's Faire is
the production of Calvin, farmer Horace Malvern's nephew.
The Faire brings entertainment and excitement to the villagers but also disrupts the tranquility
of the village with tipsy tourists. Lori becomes suspicious of what seem to be accidents. She
believes someone is trying to kill King Wilfred (Calvin). She consults Aunt Dimity, her other-world
confidant, who advises caution; but Lori is determined to save the King and the village.
As usual Atherton has given us an engaging story about a young woman who always gets involved
with the affairs of her village. There is a wealth of descriptions of medieval customs, costumes,
food and pageantry. The narration of the jousts is amusing. The story is well-plotted, the
characters engaging.
This is a pleasant easy read for an afternoon's relaxation.
