There’s a newcomer in Lochdubh, but only half of the village seems to be pleased to see
her. Catriona Beldame is a supposed witch, and the men just can’t seem to get enough of her,
or can it be something that she is selling to them? Their wives certainly don’t like it, and
when she is found dead there are a large number of suspects—too many. Hamish Macbeth
must discover whodunit before there are too many more bodies, but it isn’t going to be easy.
This particular entry into this long-running series has a first-rate
intricate plot, complete with a fishing boat full of red herrings
and several interesting new characters. Once again Hamish has a
new love interest (as well as more than one old love interest) and
there is plenty to laugh at in the shape of the author’s witty comments
about foreign vacations and the rocky relationships between outwardly
respectable couples. Everything you expect (or hope) to find in
a Hamish Macbeth story is in this one, making it one of the stronger
entries in a series that ought to go for a good long time yet.
