Daisy is surprised when she is contacted by somebody she was at
school with and did not know very well. Sybil Sutherby is a young
widow with a daughter living with a popular author and his family
in rural Derbyshire. She works as his secretary but recently she
has started to think that something is amiss. Humphrey Birtwhistle
is a virtual invalid with a houseful of family and long term guests,
who all seem to be living off the proceeds of his book sales. Enter
Daisy to investigate!
Twenty books into the series and it shows no signs of flagging yet,
keeping the idea of Daisy travelling to different locations and
solving murders fresh and interesting. This time she is in rural
Derbyshire and there are some delightful descriptions to enjoy as
well as a teasing plot. Ms Dunn has written another classic house
party murder but manages to bring it to life and keep the pages
turning. She does this with a mixture of red herrings and a number
of lively characters both new and old; just enough of them to keep
it a mystery to puzzle over but not tie the reader in knots. Like
all long running series, one of the things that keep a reader coming
back for more is to hear about the latest exploits of well loved
characters. This series is better than most at creating and populating
its own special world; may it long continue to do so.
