Cooper is a psychic detective who works with her friend and
partner, Candice Fusco, a private investigator. She has no
doubts that they're best friends – until she hears Candice’s
urgent message on her phone’s voice mail stating, “It’s
not how it looks.” Candice adds that Abby mustn't tell
anyone about the message, and asks Abby to collect a file
folder and money from Candice’s safe. Once obtained,
Abby hides both at a neighbor’s house. Abby’s
husband Dutch and Candice’s husband Brice both work
for the FBI. When the three of them watch a surveillance tape
of a woman fatally shooting a man at an airport parking lot,
Abby recognizes Candice’s car, clothes and shoes. The
video shocks all three, for the killer appears to be Candice
– and she has disappeared. When Abby can't locate her
best friend using intuition, Abby follows clues that lead
her to Vegas – and straight into danger.
I love Victoria Laurie’s Psychic Eye series, and especially
the camaraderie between BFFs Abby and Candice. Abby’s
monologues are always insightful and touching, and because
Candice is missing in this book, Abby’s inner turmoil
and doubts about her friendship with Candice causes an emotional
turmoil in both the character and the reader. While the tape
clearly shows Candice killing a man, Abby inherently believes
that Candice is not a killer – and risks her life to
prove it.
Fatal Fortune is action packed from beginning to
end, a solid mystery with surprising twists and turns that
kept me turning pages like a fan in the desert. Ms. Laurie
does an excellent job of characterization, taking Abby on
an emotional roller-coaster ride, wanting to believe her intuition
against supposedly solid visual proof that Candice killed
a man in cold blood. Fatal Fortune is yet another winner in
an outstanding series.
