Fair Warning: there are plenty of spoilers from Along Came
a Spider, so if you haven’t read it, you may want
to, before you read this short story.
Cross
Kill opens with Alex Cross and his partner, John Sampson,
serving up breakfast for the poor and needy. They’re
taken by surprise, and John is shot in the head. It’s
not enough that Cross is forced to see a partner and friend
go down, but the shock of it all is the man holding the weapon.
Alex Cross is being haunted by the walking dead, the killer
from Along Came a Spider (1993). Alex goes over the
old case, looks up past contacts of the killer, and uses technology
and experts to hunt down the person who shot his partner.
Alex’s family makes an appearance in this short story.
Nana Mamma is loosening up a bit with their winnings, but
continues to share her wisdom on what’s really important
in life. I think everyone should have a Nana Mamma in their
life.
In this short story, Patterson solves the
case of who, what, and where, but not the why. The epilogue
is a lead into Patterson’s next Cross novel. Patterson
leaves us wondering if Alex and his job will survive the choices
he made concerning this case. It’s a tense two and half
hours listen read by Actor Ruben Santiago-Hudson, who narrates
the audio version. He is perfect as Alex Cross.
At the
end of the audiobook is a sample of Patterson’s next
BookShot, “The Trial,” A Women's Murder
Club Story. Be Warned: there is a spoiler from the last in
series.
