7th Heaven
Women's Murder Club

by James Patterson and Maxine Paetro
Read by Carolyn McCormick

This is another in the Women's Murder Club series that is very familiar to anyone who knows James Patterson's work. The series is also the basis of the current television show on ABC.

The audio book is read by Carolyn McCormick (who coincidentally was a recurring character on NBC's Law & Order with the current star of ABC's Women's Murder Club Angie Harmon). McCormick is an excellent narrator who makes you forget that the book is being read to you, as her voices for each character are distinct, and she even does the men well.

There are two mysteries in the book. The first is the case of the disappearance of Michael Campion, the governor's son. A young man with a bad heart, he is only 17 when he disappears. A tip leads Lindsay and her partner, Rich, to arrest a young woman who is a prostitute. Much to their amazement, she confesses to the murder. What seems to be a sure-thing case for Yuki Castellano however, turns out to be quite different.

While the trial is going on, Rich and Lindsay find themselves investigating a series of arson / homicides. Someone is killing rich couples by burning down their homes with them in them.

There are also personal complications for Lindsay, as she finds herself torn between her relationship with her partner and her lover. She's turned down a proposal of marriage from the man who moved to San Francisco to be with her. Does that mean she really wants to be with Rich?

And Yuki is being courted by a famous writer who was doing a biography of Michael Campion when the young man disappeared. He comes on strong, too strong, and soon Yuki begins to fear that the man will do her serious harm, if in fact he hasn't murdered someone already.

The story involving the young prostitute is interesting, but the one involving the really horrific murders of the wealthy couples will grab you by the throat. Two young men are killing and leaving messages behind. Their motive seems to be proving that they are smart enough to not be caught and that the truly wealthy deserve to die. How they are eventually caught and the graphic violence involved are pretty grisly stuff.

Best of all is the completely unexpected ending to this book. It will leave you laughing at the surprise.
